If you are like me, you never put away childish things as you got older. MAD Magazines, model trains, board games and puzzle books followed me into adulthood. Today, I’m going to focus on puzzle books. That’s what I call them, despite the existence of a grown-up niche on Amazon called Adult Activity Books.
Technically, I guess there is a difference. Some adult activity books have things for you to color. Others have mazes and whatnot. If you go to the newsstand or a bookstore, you’ll find dozens of magazines with puzzles, mazes and drawing activities. I love that there is an audience for these publications. Of course, there is a massive interest in creating them, as well.
When I first learned of Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), I dismissed it, as I was not planning to write a novel. In 2020, I decided I wanted to publish a book of puzzles. KDP wasn’t even a consideration. I thought about using Gumroad, Etsy, BuyMeACoffee and other patron-supported sites. But, you know how the Internet works: as soon as you start researching, the dominant wave washes out all other results. Everything was KDP this, KDP that. Make millions while you sleep. Bah!
